Herbal Profile - Lilac - Syringa
________________________________________
Scientific Name- Syringa
Family - Oleaceae
Kingdom - Plantae
Most lilac varieties including the Common or French Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) prefer cool climates, though some tolerate warmer locales. Cold winters trigger a period of dormancy, which they need to bloom. The timing depends on variety and location, but generally, lilac bushes bloom in the spring and only for two weeks.
Lilac plants have deep green leaves arranged oppositely along the stems. The leaves are usually simple with entire margins, though the leaves of some species are lobed or compound. The small four-petalled flowers are borne in large oval clusters. The fruit is a leathery capsule.
I consider lilacs one of my favorite herbal allies.
